TikTok Banned: CAK Considers to Ban TikTok in Kenya

Considering a recent BBC documentary highlighting the surge of commercial nudity and live sexual performances among certain Kenyan TikTok users. The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has reached out to TikTok for clarification regarding the widespread nature of this content in the country. This is as sexual content is on the rise. At around 2 AM TikTok livestreams are filled with young girls as low as 15 who act suggestively to lobby for money from viewers.

Why CA Want to Ban TikTok in Kenya

The BBC report reveals that many young girls on TikTok are being exploited by digital pimps who compensate them for performing naked or engaging in inappropriate acts during live streams, with some participants reportedly dedicating themselves to these activities full-time.

The CA has issued a directive to TikTok to remove all such content immediately, including live broadcasts. Additionally, the agency has initiated a formal investigation into the claims to determine if any legal violations have occurred on TikTok’s pa.

How Are Young Girls Exploited on TikTok

Social media users report that TikTok’s environment changes dramatically in the night hours. Some of the female creators performing suggestive dances while soliciting financial contributions from viewers.

“Girls start dancing inappropriately while asking the live users to send them money,” one woman explained during the interview.

This situation attracts predatory individuals who target underage girls. In one concerning case, a 15-year-old girl reported that after disclosing her age to a man who contacted her. Additionally, he expressed a preference for younger girls. Facing financial difficulties, she agreed to his proposition.

This example illustrates the vulnerability of young girls to exploitation by predators on TikTok.

Ruto’s Meeting with CEO Shou Zi Chew

In 2024, Ruto had a meeting with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. This is after the Gen-Z demos in July 2024. The government was looking at ways to moderate TikTok content. This was a platform where the youth organized anti-finance bill demonstrations, which resulted in the deaths of over 60 young Kenyans and left hundreds injured.
