Busia Police Probe Killing of KMTC Student Laura Wesonga
A dark cloud has hung over the Kenya Medical Training College Busia Campus after one of its students was fatally shot by law enforcement officers on the night of Monday, June 29, 2026. Specifically, the deceased, identified as Laura Wesonga, was caught in a lethal confrontation between police and local youths in Marachi Estate. Furthermore, the incident has sparked immense grief, public condemnation and intense local demonstrations.
Wrong Place, Wrong Time
Laura’s death came in devastating circumstances. Specifically, according to witnesses and family members, she left her residence earlier that evening for a routine workout session. Furthermore, she was returning home from the gym at approximately 9:00 PM when she unexpectedly walked into an active police operation.
The National Police Service reported officers were deployed to counter rowdy, armed youth groups linked to escalating unrest in Busia Town. During the subsequent altercation, officers discharged live bullets, with one round striking Laura in the abdomen. Despite emergency medical care, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
What Sparked the Unrest
The violence had been building for two consecutive days. Specifically, the unrest originally flared up following controversial public remarks by Busia Governor Paul Otuoma.
He had publicly called out a local youth outfit known as “Jobless,” accused of orchestrating criminal activities in the border town. Consequently, the statement ignited running battles between police and disgruntled youths.
Leaders Demand Accountability
Senator Okiya Omtatah urged police to conduct intelligence-led and professional operations. He emphasized that no police operation should cost innocent lives. Meanwhile, Governor Otuoma defended the residents of Marachi Estate.
He described them as hardworking and law-abiding citizens. He urged the public to avoid unfairly stereotyping the community.
Both leaders have petitioned IPOA to take over the investigation. They also want officers found responsible to face criminal prosecution.
Tensions Remain High
By Tuesday morning, KMTC students and civic groups staged demonstrations across Busia Town, demanding an overhaul of policing tactics.
