Scholastica: KU Graduate Ditches Modelling Career, Becomes Mama Mboga

The journey of Scholastica has been one of ups and downs, marked by loss, love, and the determination to carve her own path in life. Reflecting on her story, she shares how her life took a drastic turn following the passing of her grandmother just before she joined Kenyatta University in 2020.

“Everything was fine until my grandma passed away just before I joined campus in 2020. After that, life changed, and I had no support. I had to work while studying just to afford even KSh 50 for food,” Scholastica recalls with a sigh.

From Struggles to Strength: The Journey of Scholastica – Perseverance and Resilience

While studying at Kenyatta University, Scholastica found herself balancing both academic life and work. She took up a job in a cosmetics shop and even ventured into modeling, which provided her with some much-needed income and occasional gigs. “It wasn’t easy, but I had to make ends meet. I knew I couldn’t give up,” she says.

However, things began to change in 2022 when Scholastica met her boyfriend. The two quickly fell in love, and soon, he was taking care of her bills, giving her a sense of stability she hadn’t experienced before. But this newfound comfort came with a price. “He convinced me to quit modeling, saying it wasn’t worth it. He also made other hurtful comments about it,” she recalls. By early 2023, Scholastica had stopped modeling altogether. The couple moved in together, and Scholastica embraced the role of a housewife, dedicating most of her time to household chores and taking care of their home.

While the love and support from her boyfriend initially seemed like a relief, it gradually became clear that Scholastica’s sense of independence was slipping away. She continued her studies and, in 2024, proudly graduated from university. “I graduated in 2024 and started applying for jobs. I’ve sent over 500 applications, but nothing has worked out,” she shares, frustration creeping into her voice.

In January 2025, Scholastica made a bold decision to take control of her life. “I decided to stop waiting for the perfect job to fall into my lap and instead take matters into my own hands,” she explains. She opened a small “mama mboga” kibanda (vegetable stall) and began working hard to build her business while continuing to search for employment opportunities.

What Happened?

Her journey is a testament to resilience, as she navigates the challenges of balancing personal ambitions with life’s inevitable obstacles. Scholastica’s story is one of reclaiming agency and turning setbacks into opportunities for growth.

“I may not have the job I dreamed of just yet, but I’ve learned that there are many ways to succeed. I’m not giving up,” Scholastica says with renewed determination.

As Scholastica continues to work tirelessly at her kibanda while waiting for the next step in her career, she remains hopeful that her perseverance will eventually lead to the success she’s long worked toward.
