Impeached Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza Ditches UDA

Impeached Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza has officially severed ties with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, days after the High Court upheld her removal from office. The announcement was made by her husband, Murega Baichu.
Why Mwangaza Is Leaving UDA
Mwangaza, who initially won the Meru gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate. Had planned to join UDA in preparation for the 2027 elections. According to Baichu, she had even paid the membership fee intending to run under the UDA banner.
“Kawira Mwangaza had decided to become a UDA member, and I had also registered. She had even paid the membership fee, hoping to secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 Meru gubernatorial race,” Baichu revealed.
However, Mwangaza abandoned the plan after the party allegedly failed to support her during her impeachment process.

UDA’s Alleged Betrayal
Baichu claims that UDA’s only attempt to assist Mwangaza came when former Secretary-General Cleophas Malala. Who wrote to the Meru County Assembly urging them to halt the impeachment. However, Malala was later removed from his position, leaving Mwangaza without backing.
“It was the only time UDA spoke on the matter. They called for a pause in the impeachment process, but nothing came of it,” Baichu stated.
He further alleged that behind-the-scenes maneuvers within UDA played a role in pushing for Mwangaza’s ouster despite her loyalty to the party.
