KRA Launches New USSD Service for Taxpayers

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has rolled out a new USSD service that enables taxpayers to access key tax services without visiting offices. This initiative aims to improve convenience and compliance, especially for those without smartphones or internet access.

How to Access the USSD Service

Taxpayers can dial *222# on any mobile phone to reach the system. Furthermore, the rollout targets efficiency ahead of the upcoming tax filing season. By using the menu, users can quickly navigate tax services in just a few steps.

Available Services on the USSD Platform

The new USSD service supports multiple functions, including:

  • PIN registration and retrieval
  • Turnover Tax filing
  • Monthly Rental Income declarations
  • ETIMS invoice submissions
  • Tax payments
  • Access to Tax Compliance Certificates and Customs returns

Moreover, the system ensures that Kenyans can complete transactions even without internet connectivity.

Addressing Digital Barriers

KRA recognized that some taxpayers face challenges with digital literacy and internet access. Therefore, the USSD platform guarantees that all Kenyans, regardless of technology skills, can meet tax obligations.

Taxpayers can recover or verify old KRA PINs using Option 5 after dialing *222#. This feature is crucial during tax filing, as PIN verification prevents delays and errors in submission.

The service minimizes trips to KRA offices, saving time and reducing congestion. Consequently, the initiative strengthens compliance while offering nationwide convenience.

Upcoming Validation of Tax Returns

KRA will validate declared income and expenses against ETIMS invoices, customs records, and withholding tax data. The first validation will focus on 2025 tax returns filed via iTax.

Taxpayers must submit accurate returns before June 2026 to avoid discrepancies or penalties. This validation ensures that all filings meet regulatory standards while simplifying oversight for the Authority.
