Amsons Group and Oryx Energies Tanzania fuel business transaction

Amsons Group plans to take over Oryx Energies’ Tanzania downstream operations, expanding its fuel storage, retail and distribution network.

The Amsons Oryx deal will transfer Oryx Energies’ Tanzania downstream business to Amsons Group for more than US$230 million. However, completion still depends on regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.

The transaction covers the Geneva-based company’s fuel retail stations, storage terminals and distribution infrastructure in Tanzania. Meanwhile, Oryx will continue operating its business as usual while the completion requirements remain outstanding.

Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi confirmed the agreement, describing it as a major step in expanding energy and logistics operations. He said the Tanzanian group would build on Oryx’s existing business and pursue further growth in the market.

What the Amsons Oryx deal covers

The acquisition includes bulk storage terminals, retail service stations and equity interests in strategic fuel hub partnerships. These include interests in storage operations at TIPER in Dar es Salaam.

The transaction would also increase Amsons Group’s storage capacity from 300,000 metric tonnes to 800,000 metric tonnes. Its retail network would expand to 300 stations across several countries.

Once the transaction closes, Amsons will control all downstream activities that Oryx previously conducted in Tanzania. The assets will extend the group’s reach across fuel storage, distribution and sales.

Nahdi said integrating Oryx’s distribution network and storage facilities would help strengthen domestic fuel security. He also linked the investment to Tanzania’s role as a regional logistics hub for East and Central Africa.

Oryx shifts focus within Africa

For Oryx Energies, the agreement forms part of an ongoing strategic review of its African downstream assets. Chief Executive Moussa Diao said the transfer would place key energy infrastructure under local ownership.

Diao described Amsons as a Tanzanian business with strong local roots and ambitions for growth. He also said the group could build on the operation’s strengths and create opportunities for employees, customers and partners.

Meanwhile, Oryx plans to direct capital and resources towards developing energy infrastructure across Africa and strengthening trading activities. Diao said Africa remained central to the company’s business and long-term plans.

Until completion, Oryx will maintain its focus on customers, partners and safe, reliable service delivery in Tanzania.

Expansion extends beyond fuel

The proposed takeover follows Amsons Group’s wider push into energy and manufacturing across the region. That expansion includes its acquisition of Mbeya Cement in Tanzania.

In Kenya, the group has also launched multimillion-dollar buyout offers for Bamburi Cement and East Africa Portland Cement. Its energy investments additionally include a 1,000-megawatt solar project in Zambia.

The Tanzania fuel transaction would therefore add storage and distribution assets alongside the group’s broader industrial investments. Regulatory clearance remains a condition before the Oryx takeover can close.
