The Eldoret Road section near the Nairobi River remains closed as construction of a vehicular bridge continues.
KURA says logistical and site challenges have delayed the Nairobi River bridge, keeping existing diversions in place until 6pm on December 30, 2026.
Motorists using Eldoret Road in Nairobi will face continued diversions after KURA extended a section’s closure.
The affected stretch near the Nairobi River was initially scheduled to reopen on September 18.
However, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has extended the closure until December 30, 2026.
The section will remain closed until 6pm as construction of a vehicular bridge continues.
As a result, motorists heading towards Eastleigh, Uhuru Estate and Jogoo Road will face longer diversions.
KURA said existing alternative traffic arrangements will remain in place throughout the extended closure.
Material Delays Slow Bridge Construction
In a public notice, KURA attributed the extension to unforeseen logistical and site-related challenges.
These difficulties include delays in delivering critical materials and equipment for the bridge works.
According to the authority, the delays were beyond the contractor’s control.
Consequently, the challenges have pushed completion beyond the original reopening date.
The closure first took effect at 6am on May 18, with motorists directed to alternative routes.
Meanwhile, KURA will maintain the diversion plan as construction continues.
Alternative Roads Remain Open
The current traffic plan directs motorists through several roads around the closed section.
These include Wangu Road, Heshima Avenue, Mohammed Yusuf Road, Sinoni Road and 19th Street.
Additionally, traffic police officers and marshals will continue managing movement around the construction area.
KURA has urged motorists to follow their instructions and plan journeys in advance.
Drivers should also allow extra travel time when using the connecting roads.
For motorists heading towards Eastleigh, Uhuru Estate and Jogoo Road, the diversions will remain necessary.
Temporary Bridge Available for Pedestrians
Pedestrians also have alternative arrangements during the construction period.
A temporary pedestrian bridge provides a crossing point while contractors build the new vehicular bridge.
Therefore, pedestrians can continue crossing the Nairobi River without using the closed section.
KURA has urged all road users to exercise caution around the construction zone.
KURA Sets New Reopening Date
KURA said it remains committed to completing the bridge within the revised timeline.
At the same time, the authority said it would maintain the required safety and quality standards.
The agency also apologised to motorists and other road users for the prolonged disruption.
For now, vehicles cannot use the affected Eldoret Road section near the Nairobi River.
The existing diversions will therefore remain operational until December 30.
KURA expects the section to reopen at 6pm on December 30, 2026.
