IEBC says voter registration is continuing as it prepares for Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
The electoral commission says no credible evidence supports claims of foreigners joining Kenya’s voter register and pledges action against any proven malpractice.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has rejected claims that foreigners are being registered as Kenyan voters.
The commission has also dismissed allegations of illegal voter transfers and other malpractice.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon challenged those making the claims to provide verifiable evidence.
He said the commission would investigate credible complaints brought forward by the public.
The electoral agency is currently preparing for the 2027 General Election.
It has also continued its voter registration and related electoral preparedness activities across Kenya.
IEBC Demands Evidence of Alleged Malpractice
The commission said allegations of illegal registration must come with information that investigators can verify.
The same requirement applies to claims involving unlawful voter transfers or favouritism.
IEBC warned against circulating what it described as misleading or unverified information.
The commission said unsupported claims could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Ethekon said credible evidence would allow the commission to take appropriate action.
Such action could include disciplinary measures or referrals for criminal investigations and prosecution.
Identification Required for Voter Registration
IEBC said voter registration follows requirements established under Kenya’s electoral laws.
Eligible applicants must provide valid identification documents during registration.
These include a Kenyan national identity card or a Kenyan passport.
The commission also distinguished voter registration from the issuance of citizenship documents.
IEBC does not issue national identity cards or passports.
Instead, its mandate includes registering eligible Kenyan citizens and maintaining the voter register.
The commission said the process therefore relies on established legal and administrative requirements.
IEBC Continues 2027 Voter Registration
IEBC resumed Continuous Voter Registration on September 29, 2025, as part of preparations for the 2027 election.
The commission later conducted an Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration exercise across all 290 constituencies.
The exercise also covered universities, colleges, vocational institutions and Huduma Centres.
IEBC recorded more than 2.6 million new voters during the registration drive, according to its published figures.
The commission’s wider 2027 Election Operations Plan targets 6.3 million new voters.
It also plans to work with population agencies to improve the accuracy of the voter register.
Commission Urges Public to Verify Claims
IEBC said it remains open to credible complaints about the registration exercise.
The commission has urged members of the public and stakeholders to submit evidence when raising electoral concerns.
It said such information would help investigators establish whether any irregularities occurred.
IEBC has also continued engaging stakeholders as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather pace.
The commission says its focus remains on a credible, inclusive and transparent electoral process.
