The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary closure of the Nairobi Southern Bypass for the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.

The closure will affect the section between Ole Sereni Interchange and Kikuyu Town. It will begin at midnight on Saturday, October 24, 2026, and end at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 25. The road closure will support preparations and activities for the annual marathon.

Motorists Urged to Plan Ahead

KeNHA Director-General Luka Kimeli has urged motorists to plan their journeys before the closure begins. The authority will deploy traffic marshals and police officers along the affected corridor. They will help direct traffic and guide motorists towards alternative routes.

Drivers should expect possible delays on nearby roads during the event. Motorists should also allow extra travel time and follow instructions from traffic officers.

Recommended Alternative Routes

KeNHA has advised motorists to consider alternative roads when planning their journeys. Drivers heading towards Nairobi’s city centre can consider Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway, depending on their destinations.

Motorists connecting through Lang’ata, Karen and parts of Ngong Road can use Lang’ata Road. Drivers travelling between Kikuyu and Nairobi’s western suburbs can consider Dagoretti Road and Waiyaki Way.

However, motorists should check current traffic conditions before leaving. They should also follow official updates from KeNHA and traffic authorities.

What Motorists Should Know

The temporary closure will affect travel between several parts of Nairobi and its surrounding areas. Motorists travelling through the Southern Bypass should plan alternative journeys before midnight on October 24.

Drivers should also allow additional time for trips during the closure period. The authority’s announcement aims to help road users prepare for the disruption while supporting the successful staging of the Nairobi Marathon.
