A Kenya Forest Service (KFS) helicopter crashed during takeoff at Kericho Golf Club on Monday, October 12, 2026, leaving all five occupants injured, according to initial reports.

Environment Principal Secretary Dr. Festus Ng’eno and three senior forestry officials were reportedly among those aboard the green-and-white aircraft, registration number 5Y-FSK.

The incident prompted an emergency response, with the occupants evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Pilot and Passengers Receive Medical Attention

Initial accounts suggested the occupants had escaped without injuries. However, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Samwel Ndanyi later reportedly confirmed that the pilot sustained injuries.

The passengers also suffered shock and minor injuries, according to subsequent media reports. All five occupants were taken to local medical facilities, including Kericho South Rift Hospital. Reports indicated that they were in stable condition while receiving treatment.

Helicopter Suffers Extensive Damage

Images circulating after the crash showed significant damage to the aircraft. The helicopter’s tail section appeared to have separated from the main fuselage, highlighting the severity of the incident.

The aircraft is reported to belong to the Kenya Forest Service. Authorities have yet to establish the precise sequence of events that led to the crash.

Investigators Examine Possible Causes

Witness accounts cited in local reports suggested the helicopter made unusual mechanical sounds shortly after lifting off.

The aircraft reportedly lost altitude before crashing. Weather conditions, including light rain, were also mentioned as possible contributing factors.

However, these accounts do not establish the cause of the accident. A formal investigation involving relevant aviation authorities is expected to examine the aircraft, operational records, weather conditions, and witness statements.

Authorities Seek Answers After Kericho Crash

The incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the helicopter’s failed takeoff. Investigators will need to determine whether mechanical problems, environmental conditions, operational factors, or another issue contributed to the crash.

Meanwhile, the reported survival of all five occupants offers some relief as they receive medical attention. Further official updates are expected to clarify their condition and provide more information about the investigation.
