Kenya’s contingent joins a 156-player field in Kigali, with Kibugu, Dismas Indiza and Greg Snow among the contenders for the inaugural title.
Njoroge Kibugu heads a 15-player Kenyan contingent targeting the inaugural Rwanda Open title in Kigali, where a Sh20 million prize purse awaits a field drawn from the Sunshine Development Tour-East and Sunshine Tour.
The tournament, scheduled to conclude on Sunday, brings together 29 SunDev players and 127 Sunshine Tour professionals. The 156 golfers will compete over 72 holes on a par-72 course, with only the top 50 and ties progressing after the opening 36 holes.
Kenya’s challenge combines established professionals, local circuit winners and two leading amateurs, giving the contingent several contenders for a place in the weekend rounds.
Kibugu carries Kenya’s hopes
Kibugu, 22, of Muthaiga Golf Club, arrives with the distinction of being the only Kenyan to have made the cut at this year’s Magical Kenya Open, where he recorded six under par. He will be seeking to build on that performance against another sizeable professional field.
His elder brother, Mutahi Kibugu, is also in the Kenyan line-up, adding a family contest to the pursuit of the maiden Rwanda Open crown.
Veteran Dismas Indiza of Kakamega Sports Club brings extensive competitive experience. He secured his Sunshine Tour card after a victory at Ruiru and a tally of 753 Order of Merit points, earning a place alongside Kenya’s other full tour members.
Former Safari Tour champion Greg Snow, also of Muthaiga, is the third Kenyan holding a full Sunshine Tour membership card. His length off the tee could be an asset on Kigali’s par-fives, although finding fairways will remain important over the four rounds.
Experienced professionals and amateur challengers
David Wakhu will be looking for an improved run after a lean 2025, while Daniel Nduva, CJ Wangai, Adel Balala, Sammy Mulama, Samuel Njoroge and Taimur Malik add depth to the travelling squad.
All six have won on the local circuit. Their first task in Kigali will be to finish inside the cut line and secure the chance to compete over the final 36 holes.
John Lejirma and Michael Karanga provide the amateur challenge. The two leading Kenyan amateurs were part of the six-man team at Karen and now have another opportunity to test themselves against experienced professionals.
Justus Madoya, a former Safari Tour champion, and Nelson Mudanyi complete Kenya’s contingent. Both bring winning experience to a tournament that places regional golfers alongside a much larger Sunshine Tour field.
Regional rivals pose a strong challenge
Rwanda’s Celestine Nsanzuwera is among the regional players standing in Kenya’s way. He is second on the SunDev Order of Merit with two victories, including one in Kigali, giving the home contender valuable experience of winning in the host city.
Uganda’s Ronald Rugumayo also heads to Kigali in strong form. He won the recent Pearl of Africa Series and opened the Uganda Professionals Open with a three-under-par 69 to take the lead. He has confirmed Kigali as his next destination.
The Rwanda Open also forms part of a broader opportunity for East African golfers through the East Africa Swing, which offers 10 ranking events and three tour cards. For the Kenyan contingent, the Kigali tournament presents both an immediate title challenge and a chance to advance within that competitive pathway.
