Police arrested four suspects in a Laikipia game meat operation on Saturday, recovering 38.6 kilogrammes of suspected game meat. The National Police Service (NPS) said intelligence guided the operation targeting illegal wildlife-related activities.
Officers from Matanya Police Station joined other security agencies in carrying out the arrests. The NPS said the team found the four suspects in possession of the meat.
Suspects in custody after Laikipia game meat operation
The suspects come from Weru-ine, Matanya Centre, Waguthiru and Mitero areas, the police service said. They remain in custody pending processing and arraignment in court.
Meanwhile, security agencies continue efforts to tackle poaching and the illegal trade in wildlife products. The NPS said these activities threaten wildlife conservation.
Police urge public to report wildlife offences
Following the arrests, the police service warned against possessing, trading in or consuming game meat. It said Kenyan law prohibits these activities and provides severe penalties for poaching and dealing in wildlife trophies.
The NPS also urged residents to report suspected poaching, illegal wildlife trade and other suspicious activities. Members of the public can contact the nearest police station or use the service’s toll-free emergency lines.
In addition, the service stressed the importance of cooperation between communities and law enforcement agencies. It said public cooperation helps officers identify and disrupt illegal wildlife-related activities.
