Kenya is preparing to mark the 63rd Mashujaa Day on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with Eldoret set to host the national celebrations.

This year’s event will bring together Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties under the theme of security, sports and the economy.

The celebrations will highlight the region’s athletic heritage, ongoing infrastructure development and efforts to strengthen economic opportunities.

Eldoret Prepares for National Celebrations

The main ceremony will take place at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, which has a reported seating capacity of 15,043.

Security agencies have conducted rehearsals and parade drills ahead of the national event. Chief of Defence Forces Charles Kahariri has reportedly participated in preparations at the stadium.

Authorities are working to ensure that security arrangements and event logistics are ready before the celebrations begin.

The joint hosting arrangement involving three counties also places the North Rift region at the centre of this year’s national commemoration.

Mashujaa Thematic Week Highlights Innovation

Preparations have included a Mashujaa Thematic Week held from October 13 to 18 at Eldoret National Polytechnic. The programme featured exhibitions from public and private sector organisations. Participants showcased initiatives involving digital economies, cybersecurity and government services.

The exhibitions also provided an opportunity to highlight developments in technology, finance and business. These activities complement the main celebrations by focusing attention on economic transformation and the role of innovation in national development.

Infrastructure Projects Receive Attention

The government has also used the preparations to accelerate infrastructure development across the North Rift region. Planned and ongoing projects include road upgrades, improved water connectivity and investments in local sports facilities.

These initiatives include developments at Kapsabet Stadium in Nandi and Kamariny Stadium in Iten. The projects are expected to support local communities beyond the national celebrations. Improved facilities could also strengthen sports development, transport links and access to essential services.

Security, Sports and the Economy

Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has highlighted the relationship between security, economic activity and community development.

Security remains a central pillar because stable communities create a more supportive environment for businesses, schools and investment.

Sports also feature prominently because the North Rift has a strong tradition of producing elite athletes. Better facilities could help nurture young talent while creating opportunities in coaching, tourism and related industries.

Meanwhile, the economy and finance pillar focuses on investment, trade and digital transformation. These priorities aim to expand financial access and strengthen connections between regional economies.

A Joint Celebration for the North Rift

The 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations will place Eldoret and neighbouring counties in the national spotlight. Beyond honouring Kenya’s heroes, the event will showcase regional development priorities and the contribution of sports, security and economic activity to national progress.

As preparations conclude, attention now turns to the October 20 ceremony and the projects expected to leave a lasting impact on the region.
