Six candidates will contest the November 17 ward poll after IEBC completed registration and urged all sides to campaign peacefully.
Campaigns for the Migwani by-election have begun after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission cleared six candidates. Voters will elect their next county assembly representative on November 17.
The ward seat fell vacant after Harrison Maluki Mawia resigned as MCA. He left the position to become Clerk of the Kitui County Assembly.
Six candidates cleared for Migwani by-election
Returning Officer Julius Maingi cleared three candidates on October 23, completing the field for the contest. They are Susan Nzoka, Mwangangi Munyoki and Kimanzi Mwendwa.
Nzoka will represent the Party of Independent Candidates of Kenya, while Munyoki will contest under the Wiper Patriotic Front. Mwendwa is the United Democratic Alliance candidate.
Three other candidates had secured clearance on Wednesday: Michael Kive, Christine Mwende and Joel Kuri. Kive represents the Peoples Party of Kenya, while Mwende will run under the National Economic Development Party. Kuri is the Mabadiliko Party of Kenya candidate.
IEBC urges peaceful campaigns
As campaigning begins, Maingi urged candidates, political parties, supporters and other stakeholders to follow the Electoral Code of Conduct. He also called for tolerance and respect for opposing views throughout the electoral process.
His appeal extended beyond the campaign period, urging peaceful coexistence before, during and after the election.
The IEBC emphasised that every candidate has the right to campaign freely. It also said voters deserve an environment where they can choose without fear or intimidation.
Meanwhile, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating a free, fair, transparent and peaceful by-election.
