Charles Momanyi struck in the 87th minute as Kakamega Homeboyz beat Mombasa United 1-0 at Mbaraki Sports Club.

Mombasa United suffered a late setback on their FKF Premier League return, losing 1-0 to Kakamega Homeboyz on Saturday. Charles Momanyi scored in the 87th minute at Mbaraki Sports Club, ending the hosts’ hopes of a celebratory homecoming.

The Homeboyz defender converted a deflected ball after Mombasa’s defence lost concentration with three minutes remaining. Until then, hundreds of supporters in blue and white had filled the ground with drums, vuvuzelas and cheers.

However, the late breakthrough silenced the home crowd. Some fans stood with their hands on their heads, while others headed towards the exits in disbelief.

Mombasa United struggle with the final ball

Despite their attacking pressure, the hosts struggled to turn promising moves into clear chances. They pressed high and recovered possession well, but poor delivery repeatedly undermined their work.

Coach Abdulhamid Moallin’s post-match assessment highlighted shortcomings in the final third. Overhit crosses, hurried shots and a lack of composure inside the penalty area limited Mombasa’s threat.

Rashidi Waziri and new signing Mogbademu Adeyemi combined well during the match. However, the hosts managed only one shot on target across the 90 minutes.

That limited return left Mombasa unable to make their periods of control count. Meanwhile, Homeboyz stayed in contention until Momanyi supplied the decisive finish.

Late defensive lapse settles the contest

Set-piece discipline also proved costly for the home side. An unnecessary foul and two cheaply conceded corners in the final quarter contributed to their late difficulties.

Momanyi then punished the defensive lapse, giving Homeboyz the only goal of the match. His intervention turned a lively afternoon for the home supporters into a disappointing opening-day result.

The defeat exposed problems at both ends for Moallin’s side. Alongside their struggles with the last pass, Mombasa failed to protect their position during the closing minutes.

Supporters applaud despite disappointment

Although the result dampened the homecoming, supporters still applauded the players off the pitch. Their response offered encouragement after a match that had begun with a festive atmosphere.

For Mombasa, the opening fixture leaves clear areas for improvement: attacking delivery, finishing and late-game concentration. However, with only one match played, the defeat remains an early setback in their Premier League return.
