Nairobi Official Faces Backlash Over Viral Club Scandal Intervention

NAIROBI, Kenya — January 19, 2026 — Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria is under fire after his high-profile handling of a viral scandal involving a young woman and her estranged boyfriend.

The Scandal

The controversy erupted when explicit videos of 22-year-old Marion Naipei surfaced online. The clips were allegedly recorded by her former boyfriend, James Opande, a U.S.-based Kenyan. Naipei claims Opande drugged her before filming her without consent. She also alleged that the dispute escalated after she refused his demand to involve two other men.

Naipei has since apologized publicly for her intoxicated state in the videos.

Mosiria’s Intervention

Mosiria condemned the recording as a criminal violation of privacy and human dignity. He promised to ensure Opande’s arrest and claimed to have alerted immigration authorities to issue a “red notice” preventing Opande from leaving the country.

Mosiria also oversaw the arrest of two people accused of attempting to bribe Naipei with KSh 50,000 to drop the case.

Public Backlash

Despite his intentions, Mosiria is facing strong criticism online:

  • Clout-Chasing Allegations: Critics accuse him of using Naipei’s situation to grow his TikTok following, now over 1.2 million.
  • Claims of Hypocrisy: Netizens resurfaced a photo of Mosiria at a nightclub 11 years ago with two women. He explained the women were his now-wife and her friend during university.
  • Selective Justice Concerns: Some argue the intervention ignored Naipei’s own role, noting both parties were intoxicated.
  • Questionable Role: Observers question why an Environment and Citizen Engagement officer is handling what they see as criminal investigations, usually under the National Police Service and DCI.

Government Response

The Ministry of Gender, Culture, and Children Services has condemned the unauthorized recording and dissemination of private images. Cabinet Secretary Hanna Wendot emphasized that such acts violate constitutional privacy rights.

Authorities continue to investigate the leaked footage, with Naipei cooperating fully.
