WRA Accused of Vandalizing Kamiruri Water Intake
Early-Morning Operation Leaves Thousands Without Water
Residents of Laikipia, Nyeri, and Nyandarua Counties allege that Water Resources Authority (WRA) officials, accompanied by armed police officers, vandalized the Kamiruri water intake, cutting off a vital supply system that serves more than 30,000 households.
According to community members, the officers arrived without prior notice, carried out the operation at dawn, and left locals shocked and confused.
Water Infrastructure Allegedly Damaged and Redirected
Witnesses claim that government officials destroyed water meters, damaged the main outlet, and diverted the water back into the river. As a result, thousands of families reportedly lost access to water used for domestic needs, irrigation, livestock, and small businesses.
Because the Mutitu Water Project spans a wide region, residents say the impact has been immediate and severe.
Community Leaders Condemn the Incident
During a December 7, 2025 interview, Joseph Kagiri, Chairman of the Kieni Constituency Water Community Projects, strongly criticized the operation.
“This is economic sabotage against thousands of households that rely on these water systems,” Kagiri stated.
Furthermore, he expressed disbelief that heavily armed police officers allegedly provided security for an operation that, in the community’s view, harmed citizens the state is expected to protect.
Legal and Procedural Questions Emerge
The incident has also raised serious concerns about legality and due process. Community members argue that the action occurred without public participation, consultation, or a court order.
Moreover, residents point to a High Court judgment issued in November 2025, which reportedly affirmed that the Mutitu Water Project and its infrastructure belong to the community.
Community Vows Legal Action
In response to the alleged vandalism, Kagiri announced that local leaders would mobilize residents and seek legal redress.
“This is an act of hooliganism and vandalism, and we will take it to a court of law,” he concluded.
