26 Nabbed in Bust of High-Level Illegal ID Syndicate

A multi-agency team has arrested 26 suspects accused of running a complex scheme to illegally obtain government identification documents. The suspects allegedly targeted National ID cards, passports, birth certificates and alien registration cards.

Operation Targets Corrupt Network of Officials and Brokers

The two-day sting targeted a wide network of civil servants, chiefs, private financiers and brokers. They allegedly fast-tracked document issuance through corruption. Moreover, investigators say the group used their positions to bypass official procedures.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects exploited their access to sensitive government systems. They allegedly registered and processed critical identity documents illegally. As a result, the scheme posed a serious national security threat by enabling undocumented individuals to move in or out of the country undetected.

Detectives Recover Government Documents and Registration Equipment

During the operation, detectives recovered government property hidden in several suspects’ homes. These items should only be stored in authorised offices. In addition, officers seized blank and filled ID application forms, fingerprint-capture devices, birth and death certificates, passports and official stamps. They also recovered several other registration instruments used in identity processing.

Suspects Linked to Several Nairobi Offices

The arrested individuals include officials and intermediaries from Embakasi, Kamukunji, Eastleigh and various government head offices. Those in custody are:
