NTSA Shuts Down Nicco Movers 1 Sacco After KMTC Student Dies

Kenya’s transport regulator has taken swift and decisive action following a deadly road accident. Specifically, the National Transport and Safety Authority suspended the operating licence of Nicco Movers 1 Sacco with immediate effect on Friday, June 12, 2026. Furthermore, the fatal accident directly involved a Kenya Medical Training College student, triggering widespread public outrage and urgent regulatory intervention.

The Order That Grounds the Sacco

NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa issued the suspension through a formal public notice. Specifically, the directive ordered an immediate halt to all public transport operations managed by the cooperative.

Furthermore, the notice stated clearly that the Authority had resolved to revoke Nicco Movers 1 Sacco’s operator licence entirely. Consequently, the Sacco cannot legally operate a single vehicle on any public route until further notice.

Zero Tolerance on Defiance

NTSA is not simply issuing a warning. Therefore, the authority has formally instructed law enforcement officers to actively monitor public routes.

Additionally, any vehicle attached to Nicco Movers 1 Sacco found operating in defiance of the ban faces immediate impoundment. Consequently, traffic police have already deployed to key terminals to enforce the grounding on the ground.

Impact on Commuters

The suspension has left hundreds of commuters stranded on routes heavily serviced by the Sacco. Nevertheless, safety advocates have strongly welcomed the move.

Furthermore, they cite a pressing and urgent need for stricter oversight across Kenya’s public transport sector. Specifically, rising cases of student fatalities and reckless driving have made regulatory action unavoidable.

What Nicco Movers Must Do Next

Regaining the operating licence will not be easy. Specifically, the Sacco must present its entire fleet for comprehensive roadworthiness inspections. Additionally, all drivers and conductors must undergo re-vetting and mandatory safety training.

Furthermore, the Sacco must cooperate fully with police during the ongoing accident investigation. Consequently, the suspension remains indefinite until all compliance requirements are fully satisfied.
