UoN and Moi University Licences Expire for LLB Programmes
The University of Nairobi (UoN) and Moi University are among five institutions whose law licences expired in December 2025.
Moreover, the Council for Legal Education (CLE) confirmed renewal applications remain under review pending audits and inspections.
CLE Confirms Licence Expiry
On January 13, 2026, CLE announced that UoN’s Parklands Campus and Moi University School of Law licences lapsed.
Additionally, both universities applied for renewal in November 2025, awaiting inspection before approval.
CLE Chief Executive Officer Prof Jack Mwimali emphasized compliance audits must be completed before licences are reinstated.
Other Universities Affected
Chuka University also lost its licence on December 10, 2025, despite paying renewal fees earlier.
Furthermore, CLE noted Chuka failed to submit required documents to finalize its renewal process.
In Kajiado County, UMMA University and African Nazarene University were listed as operating with expired licences.
UMMA applied for renewal in September 2025 and awaits audit scheduled for January 20, 2026.
African Nazarene submitted its application in November 2025, which remains under review.

Current Status of Law Programmes
Despite lapses, CLE confirmed most institutions remain compliant with legal education standards.
Moreover, only four universities currently hold valid licences to run Master of Laws (LLM) programmes.
These include Mount Kenya University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), JKUAT, and Strathmore Law School.
Additionally, four institutions, including Kenya School of Law, Kisii University, CUEA, and Mount Kenya University, can offer Diploma in Law.
Fully Licensed Universities
CLE listed 16 universities fully licensed to offer Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degrees in Kenya.
These include Egerton, Kabarak, CUEA, Strathmore, Maseno, JKUAT, Riara, Kenyatta, and Daystar Universities.
Others are University of Embu, Kisii, Mount Kenya, Zetech, Tom Mboya, Tharaka, and South Eastern University of Kenya.
Ultimately, CLE reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring quality legal education across all institutions nationwide.
