Moi University. 800 Staff Lose Jobs Amid Budget Crisis

Emotions ran high at Moi University after 800 staff members received termination letters due to financial troubles rocking the institution. The decision follows a large-scale restructuring exercise intended to reduce operational costs and keep the university afloat.
Staff were notified through a formal letter citing redundancy due to financial constraints. The letter, signed by Prof. Loice Maru, made it clear the sackings were not performance-related. But a response to circumstances beyond the university’s control.
Affected employees have been assured full terminal benefits, including severance pay and compensation for unused leave. Their final payments will be made within 30 days. They’ve also been asked to return university property before their final day.

The news has left many families in distress, with some calling for government intervention to save the livelihoods of hundreds now facing uncertainty.
This incident highlights deeper problems within Kenya’s public university system. This is where budget deficits and declining student enrollment are pushing institutions to the brink.
Moi University’s action is now being watched closely, as education stakeholders push for a sustainable solution to protect both staff and students in Kenya’s troubled higher education sector.
