R&B singer Chris Brown

The R&B singer rejected industry comparisons and celebrity relationships, while fans linked his remarks to Usher’s onstage crown moment.

Chris Brown has declared himself the king of music in a series of Instagram Stories, arguing that no other artist can rival him even when he is not at his best. The posts drew mixed reactions, with supporters defending his confidence and critics questioning his tone.

The 37-year-old R&B singer used the messages to express frustration with industry politics, comparisons with other performers and relationships he considers insincere. He also signalled that he no longer intends to soften his views to protect how others perceive him.

Brown rejects industry ties and comparisons

Brown portrayed the music business as a spectacle and distanced himself from much of celebrity culture. His posts made clear that he does not regard most fellow celebrities as friends and has little interest in maintaining those connections.

He said his priorities now centre on his children, explaining that he does not want relationships or interactions that offer them no direct benefit. The comments formed part of a broader rejection of what he characterised as superficial support within entertainment circles.

Brown also argued that he has maintained his relevance for two decades without substantial backing from the industry, despite persistent media scrutiny. He presented that longevity as part of the basis for his assessment of his standing in music.

Closing his message, the singer indicated that he was finished with trying to appear humble. He said he was prepared to accept being cast negatively rather than continue holding back his opinions.

Fans connect remarks to Usher’s crown moment

The timing of the posts prompted speculation about whether Brown was responding to Usher, his co-headliner on The R&B Tour. During a recent performance, Usher put a crown on his own head, a gesture some fans interpreted as a claim to the King of R&B title.

Brown’s comments followed days later, leading supporters online to draw a connection between the two moments. However, Brown did not name Usher in the posts, and the suggestion that his remarks targeted his tour partner remains an interpretation by fans.

That distinction leaves the intended target of Brown’s criticism unclear. Although the crown gesture has become part of the online discussion, his messages addressed the music industry and celebrity relationships more broadly.

Posts follow dispute over Texas recognition

The latest remarks also follow a separate controversy earlier in September 2026, when Texas lawmakers honoured Brown and Usher during their concert in Arlington.

State Representative Venton Jones subsequently apologised for participating in the recognition after backlash connected to Brown’s past domestic violence case. Brown responded on Instagram, saying he had not requested the honour and claiming that the lawmakers had approached him.

In that response, Brown asked to be left alone to concentrate on his fans. His latest posts have again divided audiences: supporters point to his two decades in music as grounds for his confidence, while critics view his declarations as arrogant, particularly against the backdrop of his legal and personal controversies.
