Kenyan youth leader Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, has sparked online debate after showcasing his new iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The grassroots activist displayed the 1TB device in a video shared on October 16, 2026. Gaucho said he purchased the phone for KSh 360,000 at a Nairobi retail outlet.

The purchase has drawn attention partly because it comes months after his appointment to the management board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

Gaucho Shows Off Luxury Smartphone

In the video, Gaucho unboxed the phone and showed viewers its accessories. He also encouraged people to verify the device’s authenticity at the shop where he purchased it.

However, the phone was not the only talking point. Gaucho used the moment to address critics who have questioned his education and background. He also shared a message encouraging young people to believe in themselves despite negative comments.

Thanks Raila Odinga and William Ruto

Gaucho also expressed gratitude to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and President William Ruto. He credited his loyalty to Raila Odinga’s family as part of his journey.

He also thanked Ruto and made remarks supporting the President’s political future. His comments added a political dimension to the discussion surrounding his latest purchase.

Appointment to Mama Lucy Hospital Board

In April 2026, Nairobi County appointed Gaucho to the board of management of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. The appointment took effect on April 16 for a three-year term. It formed part of a wider restructuring of management boards across Nairobi’s public hospitals.

His appointment attracted mixed reactions, with some questioning his qualifications for a public hospital governance role. Others defended the inclusion of grassroots representatives in public institutions.

Wealth Display Sparks Mixed Reactions

Gaucho’s latest purchase has prompted discussions about his changing lifestyle and public role. Some social media users have congratulated him on his progress. Others have questioned the optics of displaying expensive possessions while serving on the board of a public hospital.

Reports have also highlighted a bungalow he is reportedly constructing in his rural home. Nevertheless, the smartphone video has once again placed Gaucho at the centre of online conversation, bringing together debates about personal success, public service and social expectations.
