Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone.

The company unveiled the device on September 9, 2026, marking one of the biggest design changes in the iPhone lineup in years.

The Duo combines a pocket-sized design with a much larger screen when unfolded.

iPhone Duo Comes With Two Displays

When folded, the iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display.

Open the phone, however, and users get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display.

Apple says the inner screen is its largest iPhone display yet. It is also 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display.

The screen uses a special nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and minimize the appearance of the fold crease.

A20 Pro Chip Powers the Foldable iPhone

The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip. Apple has paired the processor with an advanced thermal-management system and custom vapor chamber.

This is designed to sustain performance during multitasking, gaming and demanding AI workloads.

The device also introduces a reimagined iOS experience built around the larger foldable display. Users can run multiple apps side by side, giving the Duo a more productivity-focused experience.

48MP Camera and Apple Pencil Support

For photography, the iPhone Duo features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system. It also has an under-display FaceTime camera, helping maintain a more uninterrupted viewing area.

Apple has further confirmed Apple Pencil support, allowing users to take notes, sketch and mark up documents on the foldable display.

iPhone Duo Price and Release Date

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. Pre-orders open on Friday, October 16, 2026, while retail availability begins on Friday, October 23, 2026.

Apple is now taking on Samsung and Chinese smartphone makers that have dominated the foldable market for years. The launch could significantly reshape competition in the premium smartphone segment.

What This Means for iPhone Fans

The iPhone Duo gives Apple fans a new option for combining a traditional smartphone with a tablet-style display. However, its $1,999 starting price puts it firmly in the premium category.

For Apple, the bigger question is whether customers will pay nearly $2,000 for a new foldable iPhone.
