Kenyan filmmaker Kennedy Njau, popularly known as Ken Heman, is demanding answers after a fire killed his two young daughters in Gachie, Kiambu County.
The girls, Tehilla Cara Wambui, 5, and Angel Nyla Njeri, 3, died when a fire engulfed their fourth-floor apartment along Kiuna Road on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Their younger sister survived after rescuers reached her on the balcony.
Heman has called for a thorough and independent investigation to establish what happened and determine whether anyone should face legal consequences.
Two Girls Die in Gachie Fire
Reports indicate that the fire broke out at around 5 p.m. Neighbours raised the alarm after noticing smoke coming from the apartment.
The children’s younger sister reached the balcony and called for help. Local teacher Joash Ondieki and other residents risked their lives to reach the girl and bring her to safety.
A postmortem examination reportedly established carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of the two girls’ deaths. However, reports reviewed did not establish the cause of the fire.
Father Raises Questions
Heman says he wants investigators to explain the circumstances surrounding his daughters’ deaths. He has also questioned why he learnt about the tragedy on Sunday morning rather than immediately after the incident.
The filmmaker alleged that the children’s mother left them inside the apartment shortly before the fire, expecting a househelp to arrive later. He also raised concerns that the door had been locked.
These claims reflect Heman’s account and have not been established as findings of an investigation. Authorities must determine the circumstances surrounding the children’s supervision and the fire.

Police Investigate
Reports indicate that detectives are investigating the incident and the circumstances in which the children became trapped inside the apartment. Heman has urged investigators to conduct a transparent inquiry and establish what happened.
The investigation will need to establish how the fire started and whether any wrongdoing occurred. Until authorities release their findings, allegations about responsibility should not be treated as proven.
Family Seeks Answers
As the family mourns Tehilla and Angel, Heman continues to call for clarity and accountability. His appeal centres on establishing the facts behind the deaths and ensuring that investigators examine the case thoroughly.
The surviving child’s rescue offered a moment of hope amid the tragedy. However, the family still awaits answers about the events that claimed the lives of the two sisters.
