President William Ruto launched his Ukambani tour by commissioning a water project in Mbiuni, Machakos County.
President William Ruto begins a four-day tour of Machakos, Makueni and Kitui, with water, roads, electricity and housing projects on his agenda.
President William Ruto has commissioned Phase Two of the Sh1.47 billion Mwala water project in Machakos County. The launch marks the start of his four-day development tour of Ukambani.
Ruto opened the tour in Mbiuni, Mwala Constituency, with the Mwala Cluster Last Mile Water Supply Project. It aims to improve reliable water access in parts of Machakos that face persistent shortages.
The October 24–27 programme covers Machakos, Makueni and Kitui counties. It also includes road launches, electricity connections, housing inspections and title deed distribution.
Mwala water project targets persistent shortages
During the commissioning, Ruto said his government would prioritise water infrastructure to address shortages across Ukambani. He also said plans were underway to build two major dams in the region.
The President defended his administration’s development agenda, saying regional political alignment should not determine access to public investment.
The tour takes him into a region associated with opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka. It comes as political leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Road and electricity projects feature on itinerary
In Makueni, Ruto is scheduled to launch the Wote-Kako-Ngoluni and Kyambeke-Kyuasini-Ukia roads. He will also commission the Kyambeke-Kikoko Road.
Meanwhile, the Kitui programme includes the launch of the Kwa Vonza-Kanyangi-Chandula Road in Kitui Rural. Other planned launches include the Twimiwa-Tseikuru-Usweni and Machinery-Kyumani-Tuberie roads.
In Machakos, the itinerary includes the Kagonde-Masinga-Kithyoko and Matuu-Kyasioni-Katangi roads. These projects aim to improve transport links between rural communities, trading centres and markets.
Alongside the road works, the government plans to flag off last-mile electricity connectivity initiatives. The programme also includes commissioning the Kitui-Wote Power Sub-Station to strengthen supply in Kitui and Makueni.
Housing, education and factory plans
Beyond transport and utilities, Ruto is scheduled to break ground for the Kenya Medical Training College’s Kitui Campus. He will also inspect the Kwa Ngendu and Tseikuru affordable housing projects.
The housing programme includes a groundbreaking ceremony for the Kabati development in Kitui West. In addition, Ruto is expected to issue title deeds to Ilima residents in Makueni.
Education engagements include commissioning Kathekani Senior Secondary School in Kibwezi East and inspecting education-related infrastructure.
On the final day, Ruto is expected to break ground for a clinker cement factory in Ngaie, Mwingi North. The planned investment aims to support industrial activity and create employment opportunities in the Mui Basin.
