Police used teargas and fired shots into the air to disperse crowds after the Eastleigh building collapse. Emergency crews searched the rubble amid fears that several people remained trapped.
Nairobi City County identified the structure as a 12-storey building under construction on 1st Avenue, 9th Street. However, its ground floor already had occupants when it collapsed, the county said in a statement.
The county had not established casualty figures or the number of people affected by its 2pm update. It issued the status report on Friday, October 23, 2026.
Eastleigh building collapse prompts rescue operation
County emergency teams reached the site to assess the damage and conduct search and rescue operations. Meanwhile, rescuers worked to determine whether anyone remained beneath the debris.
Machinery also arrived to help remove rubble and give emergency crews access to potential victims. Reports of people trapped remained unconfirmed in the county’s update.
In addition, the county said it had notified the Relief Officer and was mobilising more resources. Those resources would support the ongoing emergency operation.
Police disperse crowds near the scene
Crowds gathered around the collapsed structure as emergency crews continued their work in the area. Former Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria was among those who went to the scene.
Police then moved to clear the area, using teargas and firing shots into the air. Rescue operations continued as officers dispersed the crowds.
The cause of the collapse also remained unknown at the time of the county’s update. Further information was expected as emergency teams continued their assessments and search efforts.
