Defending champions Gor Mahia FC collected KSh 1,693,100 from ticket sales after beating Murang’a SEAL 4-2 in their FKF Premier League season opener at Nyayo National Stadium on Tuesday night.

The club confirmed that 5,340 tickets were sold for the match, which marked Gor Mahia’s return to league football under floodlights after more than a decade. The evening kickoff attracted a sizeable crowd despite taking place on a weekday.

The attendance also highlighted the potential of prime-time fixtures to attract working fans and boost revenue for Kenyan football clubs.

Gor Mahia Shine Under the Floodlights

Gor Mahia wasted little time taking control of the match. Midfielder Alpha Onyango opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a superb free-kick that struck the underside of the crossbar before entering the net.

Murang’a SEAL attempted to respond, with Majaliwa Charo hitting the woodwork midway through the first half. However, the visitors struggled to contain the defending champions after the break.

Forward Shariff Musa then scored twice in the second half to strengthen Gor Mahia’s advantage. His brace put the hosts firmly in control as they pushed for a comfortable victory.

Midfielder Dwang added a fourth goal in the 71st minute with a spectacular long-range effort. The strike appeared to settle the contest and put Gor Mahia on course for maximum points.

Murang’a SEAL Fight Back Late

Murang’a SEAL refused to surrender without a fight. Second-half substitute Josphat Lopaga scored twice late in the match, reducing the deficit and adding tension to the closing stages.

However, Gor Mahia held on to secure a 4-2 victory and begin their title defence with three points.

The result also extended Gor Mahia’s unbeaten head-to-head run against Murang’a SEAL to seven consecutive matches, according to the supplied match report.

KSh 1.69 Million Gate Collection Boosts Gor Mahia

Beyond the result, the KSh 1,693,100 gate collection offered Gor Mahia an encouraging financial start to the season. The 5,340 tickets sold demonstrated the crowd-drawing potential of high-profile evening fixtures.

Scheduling matches under floodlights could also help organisers reach supporters who struggle to attend daytime games because of work commitments.

For Gor Mahia, the opening-night victory delivered both points and a promising financial return. The champions will now look to build on that momentum as they pursue another FKF Premier League title.
