AFD Group and NBA Africa brought together PE teachers and educators for practical lessons on basketball, disability inclusion and life skills.

Inclusive basketball training brought together 100 Kenyan Physical Education teachers and educators in Kitengela on Saturday. AFD Group and NBA Africa organised the full-day event to strengthen youth development through sport.

The Basketball Experience Disability Inclusion (BE-DI) Teachers’ Awareness Day took place at Fam Sports Arean Basketball Court. Participants combined classroom sessions with on-court learning, gaining practical exposure to the Jr. NBA curriculum.

Inclusive basketball training centres on access

The sessions covered basketball fundamentals alongside safe, age-appropriate and inclusive coaching practices. They also focused on helping children with disabilities participate meaningfully in the sport.

Educators explored adaptive coaching techniques, accessible activities and inclusive curriculum design. Through these approaches, the programme aims to remove participation barriers for children with different abilities.

Organisers said equipping educators to accommodate diverse learning needs makes inclusion central to children’s sporting experiences. The aim extends beyond participation, supporting how children learn and develop both on and off the court.

Life skills alongside basketball fundamentals

Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross collaborated on the training’s life skills component. This explored how sport can nurture teamwork, resilience and leadership among young people.

The component also covered health awareness and social responsibility, linking basketball lessons with wider personal development. Together, the sessions addressed both how educators teach the game and how they support young participants.

A wider youth development programme

The awareness day forms part of Basketball Experience, a joint programme by AFD and NBA Africa. The initiative uses basketball to promote education, life skills and inclusive opportunities for young people across communities.

Within that broader effort, disability inclusion focuses on creating opportunities for children of all abilities to learn and play together. Organisers emphasised that inclusion should guide sporting environments from the outset, rather than serve as an afterthought.
