Raila Odinga’s long-serving aide says cooperation with President William Ruto should deliver development, inclusion and better livelihoods in Nyanza.

Silas Jakakimba has urged the Luo community to remain committed to the broad-based government under President William Ruto. The long-serving aide to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said cooperation could advance Nyanza’s development interests.

In a statement reflecting on Raila’s political legacy, Jakakimba called for support for a united and peaceful Kenya. He also argued that decades of struggle for democracy and good governance should yield practical economic benefits.

Jakakimba backs broad-based government

Jakakimba warned against reversing what he described as the community’s collective resolve to work with the government. Instead, he presented political cooperation as an opportunity to advance regional interests while supporting national development.

He said the arrangement offers the Luo community a stronger role in national decision-making. At the same time, he urged the community to pursue the wider interests of the country.

His appeal favoured continued engagement with Ruto’s administration over a return to confrontational opposition politics. He argued that Nyanza should take a meaningful place in Kenya’s economic transformation.

Raila’s legacy and future generations

Jakakimba linked his position to Raila’s long campaign for democratic reform, constitutionalism and social justice. He said those sacrifices, alongside the efforts of other Kenyans, should lead to greater inclusion and national cohesion.

Beyond political reform, he argued that Raila’s legacy should include better opportunities for future generations. These should encompass greater equality, improved living standards and a more united country.

He therefore called for continued cooperation around what he described as a shared vision between Raila and Ruto. That vision, he said, centred on peace, unity and development.

Development priorities for Nyanza

Jakakimba also cited completed and ongoing national government projects in Nyanza as evidence of the region’s participation in development. However, his statement did not identify individual projects or give their costs and completion timelines.

He said political cooperation should deliver improved infrastructure, economic opportunities and public services for residents. His argument placed these practical benefits at the centre of the case for continued engagement.

For Jakakimba, national unity and regional development should reinforce each other. He maintained that Nyanza’s participation in government should improve local livelihoods while contributing to prosperity across Kenya.
