Thika town is now a step closer to becoming Kenya’s sixth city. This follows the unanimous adoption of a proposal by the Kiambu County Assembly. The proposal now awaits approval by the Senate, which holds the final say in granting Thika official city status.

According to Moses Ngatha, Chairperson of the Kiambu County Planning Committee. Thika has met all the necessary criteria to be elevated, including consistent achievement of targeted revenue benchmarks. He noted that the town is well-positioned to become an industrial smart city, with infrastructure and economic growth. This aligns with national urban development goals.

Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have cited numerous benefits expected from the elevation. This includes increased investment, improved infrastructure, and greater economic opportunities. They argue that city status would make Thika more attractive to investors and accelerate development across the region.

“It is our dream to make the entire Kiambu County a city. But since Rome was not made in a day, we start by making Thika Municipality a city. And perhaps, Honorable Speaker, the entire dream of making Kiambu a city will be actualized,” said Kamenu MCA Peter Mburu during the Assembly session.

If the Senate approves the proposal, Thika will officially join the ranks of Kenya’s cities, becoming the sixth after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret.
