Government Releases Capitation Funds Ahead of School Reopening

Ministry Disburses Billions
The Ministry of Education disbursed Ksh 44.2 billion to public basic education institutions nationwide. Consequently, schools will have resources ready when learners report back on January 5, 2026.
Allocation Breakdown
Free Day Secondary Education received the largest share at Ksh 26.08 billion. Additionally, Free Day Junior School Education got Ksh 14.45 billion, while Free Primary Education received Ksh 3.7 billion.
Grade 10 Transition Supported
The funding comes as Grade 10 learners prepare to join Senior Schools. Their official reporting date has been set for January 12, 2026.
Government Commitment Affirmed
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba emphasized the government’s duty to learners. Furthermore, he cited Article 53 of the Constitution guaranteeing free and compulsory basic education.
Fees Remain Unchanged
The Ministry clarified that senior school fees remain unchanged. Capitation will continue at Ksh 22,244 per learner annually.
Accountability Measures Enforced
School administrators were cautioned to use funds responsibly. Moreover, they were warned against imposing unauthorized fees on parents.
Firm Action Against Misuse
Any verified cases of misappropriation or illegal levies will face firm action. Therefore, principals must ensure prudent use of public resources.
