Nominated Nyandarua MCA Milka Nyambura Mwangi has defended her education record.
Milka Nyambura Mwangi corrected herself after citing 2097 during an interview defending her education record.
Nominated Nyandarua MCA Milka Nyambura Mwangi has drawn fresh online attention following a KCPE year mix-up during an interview. She initially said she took the primary school examinations in 2097 rather than 1997.
Nyambura made the remarks on Thursday while responding to claims that she had never attended school. When the interviewer sought clarification, she repeated the future date before recognising the error and correcting herself.
The slip became an online talking point because 2097 remains decades into the future. It also renewed attention on the legislator’s public appearances after criticism of her English during county assembly proceedings.
KCPE year mix-up during education defence
During the interview, Nyambura rejected claims that she had not gone to school. However, her attempt to explain her education history drew attention to the mistaken examination year.
In her account, she sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations in 1997 at Muhuti Primary School. The school is in North Kinangop.
She also said she returned to school years later, enrolling at Naivasha Mixed Secondary School. There, she sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations.
Her correction placed the primary school examination in 1997, not the future year she initially gave. The mistaken date nevertheless added to online discussion about her education and communication skills.
Earlier vetting remarks sparked criticism
The interview followed another widely circulated clip involving Nyambura during a county assembly vetting session. That session concerned Patrick Ndung’u Kabugi, the nominee for Chief Officer for Youth Affairs, Sports and Innovation.
During the proceedings, Nyambura asked Kabugi about the meaning of the chief officer role and its responsibilities. Her wording and how she framed those questions subsequently attracted online criticism.
Some viewers described her English as poor. The clip also prompted debate about the communication skills expected of public officials when scrutinising nominees for government positions.
Nyambura has continued to maintain that she attended school despite the criticism surrounding her education. Her latest explanation set out her primary and secondary schooling, although the date error drew renewed attention.
