The gas triggered panic, and several attendees sustained injuries as people scrambled for safety.
Despite the disruption, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna declared that the incident would not weaken the movement.
He maintained that no one can silence public dissent through force or intimidation.
Sifuna Dismisses Opposition Blame
While speaking on NTV’s Fixing the Nation on Tuesday, Sifuna firmly rejected claims that opposition leaders staged the chaos. He placed responsibility squarely on security agencies tasked with protecting lawful gatherings.
He revealed that organizers had formally notified the regional police command before the rally. However, a senior officer later claimed he had no knowledge of the event.
Sifuna argued that authorities must hold accountable those who acted unlawfully or abused their power.
Suspects Detained as Leaders Intervene
Members of the public apprehended one suspect during the commotion. The suspect reportedly carried teargas canisters and handcuffs. Sifuna noted that such equipment typically belongs to police officers.
An angry crowd briefly assaulted two young men suspected of involvement. Leaders, including Babu Owino, quickly stepped in and rescued them from further harm.
Sifuna said the incident exposed the risks of orchestrating political disruptions. However, he emphasized that it did not intimidate him or derail the movement.
