Oburu Oginga Confirmed as ODM Party Leader
On March 27, 2026, Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga officially assumed office as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader. The party confirmed his leadership during a Special Delegates Convention held at Jamhuri Grounds in Nairobi.
Moreover, delegates handed him instruments of power, marking a historic leadership transition.
Formal Transition After Acting Role
Previously, Dr. Oburu served as Acting Party Leader following the death of his brother, Raila Odinga, in October 2025. However, the convention formally ratified his position as the substantive party leader.
Consequently, ODM now enters a new era under his leadership.
Mandate to Negotiate 2027 Coalition
During the convention, delegates granted Dr. Oburu authority to begin structured negotiations with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Specifically, he will explore a possible pre-election coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election. Therefore, this move signals ODM’s strategic shift toward political alliances.

Internal Disputes Emerge
Despite the milestone, internal tensions remain within the party. Secretary General Edwin Sifuna openly questioned the legality of the leadership process. Furthermore, he leads a faction opposing the transition.
As a result, the party now faces a growing internal rift that could shape its future direction.
Key Leadership Changes Ratified
In addition, delegates confirmed several senior party officials during the convention. Governors Simba Arati and Abdulswamad Nassir assumed roles as Deputy Party Leaders. Meanwhile, Dr. Ariko Namoit and Otiende Amollo became Vice Chairpersons.
Similarly, MP Rosa Buyu took over as Secretary for Political Affairs. Ruth Odinga also secured the position of Deputy Organising Secretary. Consequently, ODM reinforced its leadership structure ahead of upcoming political activities.
A Defining Moment for ODM
Notably, this convention marked ODM’s first National Delegates Convention since the passing of its founding leader. Therefore, the event carries deep political and emotional significance.
Ultimately, Dr. Oburu Oginga now shoulders the responsibility of uniting the party and shaping its 2027 strategy. Meanwhile, observers continue to monitor how ODM will manage internal divisions and future alliances.
