Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Hafidh died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at approximately 8:00 a.m.
Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced his death in an official statement. Ndejembi said Hafidh died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condit
Tanzania’s First First Gentleman
Hafidh Ameir became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when his wife assumed the presidency in 2021. Despite his historic position, he largely maintained a low public profile.
He was known for keeping away from the political spotlight surrounding his wife’s presidency. President Samia and Hafidh married in 1978.
The couple had four children, according to official Tanzanian government information. Hafidh was also an agriculturalist and had a background connected to agriculture.
Funeral Arrangements Underway
Following the announcement, the Tanzanian government extended condolences to President Samia, the family, relatives and friends. Funeral arrangements are currently underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
Kizimkazi is also President Samia’s birthplace and a significant location in her family history. The death comes at a significant moment for Tanzania, with President Samia continuing to lead the country through a period of major political and economic developments.
