Ruiru Sports Club hosted 246 golfers for the third edition of the Swing and Wine tournament.
The six-handicap golfer topped a field of 246 as Patrick Ngunjiri and Sophie Mbochi won the men’s and ladies’ categories at Ruiru Sports Club.
Stephen Kungu won the overall title at the third edition of the Swing and Wine golf tournament after returning 65 nett at Ruiru Sports Club over the weekend.
Playing off a handicap of six, Kungu emerged on top in a field of 246 golfers. His early-morning round produced the score that remained unbeaten in the contest for the overall crown.
The tournament also recognised winners across men’s, ladies’, gross, nine-hole, senior, guest, Division Two and junior categories, with several of the leading places separated by narrow margins.
Early start pays off for Kungu
Kungu made the most of his preferred early tee-off to establish the benchmark before the rest of the field completed their rounds. His 65 nett was three strokes lower than the winning score in the men’s category and two below the ladies’ winning return.
Reflecting on the result, Kungu said he generally favoured playing in the early morning. He credited God for the strength, concentration and grace that helped him secure the victory.
The overall honour capped his outing at Ruiru, where the category competitions produced their own closely contested finishes.
Ngunjiri and Mbochi take category honours
Patrick Ngunjiri claimed the men’s title with 68 nett. Zakaria Kingori finished runner-up on 69 nett, leaving just one stroke between the two leading players in that division.
The ladies’ competition ended with the same margin at the top. Sophie Mbochi secured the title after posting 67 nett, while Secondina Kanini took second place one stroke behind her.
In the gross competition, Benard Omondi led the way with a round of 72 gross. His result earned him the gross honours alongside the tournament’s nett category winners.
Nine-hole and senior winners
Jessy Ndegwa collected the men’s first-nine prize with 34 nett, while Eric Muraguri won the men’s second-nine award after returning 32 nett.
Catherine Njoki and Catherine Wambui claimed the ladies’ nine-hole honours. Both posted 34 nett to secure their respective prizes.
Among the senior competitors, Ephraim Wachira took the Senior Gross award with 80 gross. Philip Nguyai won the Senior Men’s nett title on 70 nett, while Beth Ngugi secured the Senior Ladies’ nett trophy with 78 nett.
Guest and junior titles decided
Adah Wekesa won the guest category with 73 nett. Grace Kamau matched that score to take the Division Two title, giving both players winning returns in their separate sections.
Young golfer Evans Anyona completed the list of category winners by claiming the junior title with 72 nett. The junior, senior and guest awards rounded out a tournament in which Kungu’s 65 nett delivered the main prize.
