Tusker lost 1-0 to Singida Black Stars at Nyayo Stadium.
Jeancy Mboma scored the only goal at Nyayo Stadium as Singida Black Stars took a narrow advantage into the return leg in Tanzania.
Tusker’s loss to Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars has complicated their push for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage. The Brewers fell 1-0 at Nyayo Stadium in the first leg of their second preliminary round tie.
Substitute Jeancy Mboma settled the match in the 52nd minute after Tusker failed to convert their early chances. As a result, the Kenyan side now face a difficult return assignment in Tanzania.
Tusker loss follows missed first-half chances
The hosts began promisingly and created opportunities to take the lead before the interval. However, Singida goalkeeper Amos Yona stood firm as Tusker searched for a breakthrough.
Ian Simiyu tested Yona in the 13th minute with a low shot inside a crowded penalty area. Despite a slight deflection, the goalkeeper gathered the effort and kept the scores level.
Yona also handled several threatening crosses from Tusker’s wide players, preventing their pressure from producing a goal. His interventions helped Singida stay in the contest during the hosts’ encouraging opening spell.
At the other end, Tusker kept Singida’s Kenyan striker Mathew Tegisi under close watch. He struggled to influence the game, and Singida replaced him before the second half began.
Mboma gives Singida the advantage
After the restart, Mboma delivered the decisive moment against the run of play. The DR Congo winger beat Eugene Ikutwa on the right before sending a cross towards goal.
The delivery swerved towards the near post and deceived Tusker goalkeeper Perrauld Ndinga, finding the net. That unexpected finish gave the visitors an advantage they protected for the rest of the match.
In response, Tusker coach Papy Kimoto made changes as his side pushed for an equaliser. However, Singida maintained their defensive shape and limited the Brewers’ clear chances.
With time running out, Tusker turned to long balls and set pieces to find a way through. The visitors continued to defend effectively, preserving their narrow lead until the final whistle.
Brewers face demanding return leg
Tusker now need a victory by at least two goals in Tanzania to qualify without a penalty shootout. Their first-leg performance showed promise, but their finishing left them without a home advantage to protect.
The Brewers hope to follow other Kenyan clubs into the group stage of continental competition. Gor Mahia last reached that level in 2018, while Nairobi United achieved the feat last season.
Tusker also have their own continental history, having reached the CAF Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1994. To keep their current campaign alive, however, they must overturn Singida’s lead away from home.
