Nyali golfer Adel Balala leads Kenya’s individual challenge in Tunisia, while South Africa claims the team title.
Adel Balala finished 13th overall to lead Kenya’s golfers at the 2026 All Africa Team Championship in Tunisia. Kenya also secured sixth place in the team competition, ahead of Zimbabwe and Uganda.
The championship ran from October 13 to 17 at Citrus Golf Course, bringing together 65 players from 17 African nations. Competitors played three rounds of stroke play before the tournament ended on Saturday.
Balala, who represents Nyali Golf Club in Mombasa, completed the competition with a total of 217, one over par. He was also the only Coast player in Kenya’s four-man squad, which coach Ali Khimji led.
Adel Balala delivers consistent rounds
Balala opened with a round of 73 before returning consecutive scores of 72 across the remaining two rounds. His steady performance kept him ahead of his Kenyan teammates in the individual standings.
However, he fell two shots short of his target of a top-10 finish. Balala said the result still meant a great deal, given the strength of the field.
He pointed to strong opposition from South Africa, Morocco and Zambia, but said he remained patient and followed his game plan. The Nyali golfer also expressed pride in representing Kenya in North Africa.
Meanwhile, Nakuru Golf Club’s John Kamais finished 27th with a total of 226. He improved throughout the competition, following an opening 81 with rounds of 74 and 71.
Muthaiga’s Eugene Wafula took 34th place after rounds of 75, 74 and 79. Sigona golfer Maahir Patel, meanwhile, returned three rounds of 78 for a total of 234 and 41st place.
Kenya finishes ahead of regional rivals
The team competition counted each nation’s best three scores per round. Kenya recorded rounds of 226, 220 and 221 for a combined total of 667.
That put Kenya two shots ahead of Zimbabwe, which finished on 669. Uganda followed on 671, while Egypt recorded 677 and Seychelles finished on 679.
Balala praised his teammates’ efforts and welcomed Kenya’s finish ahead of Uganda and Zimbabwe. He also said the squad would learn from the championship as it sought stronger results.
South Africa wins team gold
South Africa claimed the team title with 624, while Morocco secured silver on 628. Zambia took bronze with 646, followed by Reunion Island and hosts Tunisia, tied fourth on 650.
In the individual competition, Seychelles golfer Adrian Andrade won with an 11-under-par total of 205. His rounds of 69, 64 and 72 placed him three shots ahead of South Africa’s Jonathan Wilsenach.
Fellow South African Judd Sundelson finished third on 209, reinforcing his country’s strong showing in both competitions.
