KFCB Moves Film Licensing Services to eCitizen
The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has moved its licensing services to the eCitizen platform, making it easier for filmmakers and creative businesses to access regulatory services online.
The digital transition aims to improve service delivery while supporting Kenya’s growing creative economy. Additionally, the move reduces paperwork and speeds up the licensing process for local and international applicants.
Three Licensing Services Now Available Online
Applicants can now process several KFCB licenses through the eCitizen platform. The services include filmmaker licenses, which cover local and foreign producers, film agents, and filming permits.
The platform also offers distributor licenses for movie shops, video libraries, and digital streaming platforms. In addition, businesses can apply for exhibitor licenses for cinemas, outdoor theatres, public video shows, and gaming centres.
Documents Required for Applications
Applicants must prepare several documents before submitting their applications. They need a valid Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration. They must also provide a corporate Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN certificate.
Company directors should submit copies of their national identification cards or passports. Furthermore, applicants must attach relevant professional certificates in filmmaking or audiovisual production. Those who own production equipment should include a detailed inventory list.

Accessing the Digital Services
Industry players can access the services through the official eCitizen platform.
They can also use the KFCB Technical Management System (TMS) to manage licensing applications. Both platforms provide a faster and more convenient application process.
Supporting Kenya’s Creative Economy
The digital integration reflects the government’s efforts to modernise public services. It also supports the ease of doing business within Kenya’s film and entertainment industry.
By moving licensing services online, KFCB expects to improve efficiency, increase transparency, and reduce processing delays. The board has encouraged filmmakers, distributors, exhibitors, and investors to embrace the new digital system.
Applicants seeking further guidance can access official policy documents, licensing guidelines, and customer support through KFCB’s online platforms.
