Aliko Dangote Proposes Mega Oil Refinery for East Africa

African industrialist Aliko Dangote has unveiled an ambitious energy proposal. He plans to build a mega oil refinery in East Africa.

The announcement came during The Africa We Build Summit in Nairobi. Therefore, the project has drawn strong regional attention.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure Plan

The refinery is planned for Tanga. This coastal location supports efficient import and export logistics.

Additionally, the project includes a pipeline to Mombasa. This connection will leverage Kenya’s existing fuel distribution network.

Consequently, regional fuel supply chains will improve significantly.

Capacity and Production Scope

The refinery will mirror Dangote’s Lagos facility. It will process up to 650,000 barrels per day.

Moreover, it will produce petrol, diesel, and jet fuel. This ensures diversified energy output across sectors.

Therefore, East Africa could reduce reliance on imports.

Timeline and Regional Cooperation

Dangote pledged a four to five-year completion timeline. However, he requires agreements among several governments.

At least three or four countries must formally commit. Therefore, regional collaboration remains essential.

Crude Supply Across the Region

The refinery will process crude from multiple countries. These include Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

Currently, the region relies heavily on fuel imports. Most supplies come from the Middle East.

However, global conflicts have caused price volatility. Therefore, local refining capacity will stabilize markets.

Leaders like William Ruto support the initiative. Yoweri Museveni also backs regional cooperation.

However, Uganda continues its Hoima refinery project. Kenya has also expressed investment interest there.

Expansion into Fertilizer Production

Beyond oil, Dangote announced new agricultural plans. He intends to build 20 fertilizer plants across Africa.

These projects aim to boost food security continent-wide.
