Nyayo to Talanta Rail Link Takes Shape for AFCON 2027
Kenya is building a direct railway line between Nyayo and Talanta Sports Stadium. The project supports preparations for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Therefore, transport planners aim to ease matchday movement. The line will improve access to key stadium venues.
Kenya Railways Leads Major Infrastructure Project
Kenya Railways manages the project. Construction started in early 2026.
Additionally, engineers are developing a new commuter spur line. It will connect central Nairobi to Talanta Sports City. Consequently, the railway will support thousands of fans.
New Stations Planned for Stadium Access
The project includes two major stations. One station will serve Nyayo National Stadium directly.
Nyayo National Stadium station will sit near Lang’ata Road. This location links existing transport corridors easily.
Meanwhile, Talanta station will serve the new complex. It will rise near Jamhuri Grounds on Ngong Road.
Additionally, the station will sit beside the 60,000-seat venue. Therefore, visitors can access matches more efficiently.
Spur Line Through Kibera
The new route will pass through Kibera. This alignment creates direct stadium connectivity.
Moreover, it may improve public transport access nearby. Therefore, surrounding communities could benefit long-term.

Current Status and Timeline
The railway remains under construction currently. No direct commuter service operates yet.
Officials designed the system for AFCON 2027 demand. Consequently, completion remains a strategic priority.
Current Travel Options to Talanta Stadium Site
Travelers must currently rely on road transport. Matatus and buses remain the main options.
From Nyayo or Embakasi, travel first to CBD. Then board Ngong or Karen-bound routes.
Use routes such as 111 or 24C. Alight at Kenol or Jamhuri stops. Therefore, journeys may take longer during traffic hours.
Why the Rail Link Matters
Major tournaments require efficient urban mobility. This railway aims to reduce congestion significantly.
Additionally, it can boost tourism and business activity. Modern transport also strengthens Nairobi’s global image.
AFCON Legacy Beyond Football
The Nyayo-Talanta rail line supports AFCON readiness. However, its benefits can outlast the tournament.
Ultimately, the project may transform stadium travel. Therefore, fans and commuters await completion eagerly.
