President Ruto Renames Wajir Stadium to Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium
President William Ruto has officially directed the renaming of Wajir Stadium. The facility will now be known as Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium.
The President made the announcement during the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir County. Notably, the event marked a historic moment for North Eastern Kenya.
For the first time, the region hosted Kenya’s main national holiday celebrations. Consequently, the occasion attracted national attention and widespread praise.
Governor Ahmed Abdullahi Proposes the Change
The renaming proposal came from Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi. During his address, he requested the President to honor the late Ahmed Khalif.
According to the governor, the move would preserve Khalif’s contributions to the region. Furthermore, it would inspire future generations to embrace servant leadership.
The proposal received strong support from local leaders and residents. Many described it as a fitting tribute to a respected statesman.
President Ruto Approves the Proposal
President Ruto immediately endorsed the request. In his remarks, he said he agreed with the proposal “one hundred percent.”
As a result, he directed the immediate renaming of the stadium. The President emphasized the importance of recognizing leaders who served with integrity.
Additionally, he noted that Ahmed Khalif’s legacy deserves national recognition.

The Ministry of Defence oversaw the project through the Kenya Defence Forces. Impressively, the team completed the facility in just 60 days.
The KSh 900 million stadium features a full-sized artificial turf football pitch. It also includes an eight-lane running track and modern VIP lounges.
In addition, the facility has terrace seating and a dedicated borehole.
