Nairobi County Now Tracks 360 Government Vehicles in Real Time

Nairobi County has taken a major step toward improving public asset management. Specifically, the county government launched a new Fleet Management System that tracks 360 vehicles already equipped with the technology.

Furthermore, Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration announced that the system targets enhanced operational efficiency, reduced running costs, and stricter accountability across all county departments.

What the System Can Do

The platform gives officers comprehensive monitoring capabilities. Specifically, authorised county officers can access the digital system to monitor the vehicle fleet in real time and pinpoint the exact geographical location of every vehicle.

Furthermore, the system records what specific duty or service each vehicle performs at any given moment. Additionally, geo-fencing verifies whether a vehicle operates within its designated boundary, while fuel monitoring tracks consumption patterns daily, weekly and monthly to flag potential losses.

Moreover, the system sends maintenance alerts when vehicles need tire replacements, servicing or repairs.

How the Rollout Is Progressing

County mechanical engineer Joseph Kang’ethe is overseeing the physical installation of telematics hardware. Furthermore, the county is centralising this installation at the Nairobi City County Central Garage in the Industrial Area.

Currently, the system fully integrates 360 vehicles into the live platform, while 62 more vehicles and 10 motorcycles remain queued for installation.

Part of a Bigger Smart City Vision

This fleet system fits into broader municipal ambitions. Specifically, the project aligns with a wider effort to introduce smart city technologies across Nairobi.

Therefore, the county will soon add artificial intelligence traffic signals and centralised enforcement units to further modernise its operations.
