Four workers sustained injuries during demolition at Avenida Building on Moi Avenue.
Nairobi City County confirms no deaths after searches at the Moi Avenue site and says a safety assessment will precede further activity.
Nairobi City County has accounted for all 24 workers after the Avenida demolition incident injured four people. The county confirmed no deaths following searches at the building along Moi Avenue.
In a situation report issued on Saturday, City Hall said search teams completed their work at approximately 1:50am. The operation included canine teams checking the site after the Friday night incident.
The building, which formerly housed Club Avenida, was undergoing planned structural demolition to prepare for redevelopment.
Avenida demolition search ends
The county’s Built Environment and Urban Planning department said four workers sustained injuries. Three of them went to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, a personnel check confirmed that all 24 workers reported at the site were accounted for. The county also said teams had completed both primary and secondary searches.
The incident occurred at Avenida Building, identified as Nairobi Block 28/285, in Nairobi Central Ward, Starehe Sub-County.
Emergency teams secure the site
Nairobi City County Fire and Rescue Services received an alert at approximately 12:11am and activated emergency response procedures. Responders then cordoned off the site before the National Disaster Management Unit took command to coordinate the response.
The county also deployed machinery to clear debris and secure the location. However, a structural safety assessment must take place before any further activity can proceed at the site.
County Executive Committee Member for Urban Planning Patrick Mbogo said the county would provide further updates as the multi-agency team completed its assessments.
