Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has apologised for leaving the national team camp but blamed a breakdown in trust with coach Jorge Jesus for his decision.

The Al-Nassr forward said Jesus repeatedly failed to honour verbal commitments about his role during Portugal’s Nations League campaign.

Ronaldo accepted responsibility for leaving the camp and said he would accept any disciplinary action from the Portuguese Football Federation.

Ronaldo Explains Portugal Camp Exit

Ronaldo said the dispute began when Jesus proposed that he play in Portugal’s home matches but remain behind when the team travelled to Norway and Denmark.

The 41-year-old rejected the arrangement, saying he could not stay behind while his teammates travelled for competitive matches.

Tensions increased before Portugal’s match against Norway when Jesus asked Ronaldo if he could play for 30 minutes. Ronaldo agreed and warmed up during the second half, but Jesus ultimately kept him on the bench.

Ronaldo said the decision further damaged his trust in the coach.

“I owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp. Despite the absolute breakdown of trust in the head coach’s word, I shouldn’t have done it. The responsibility is mine alone,” Ronaldo said.

Dispute Escalates Before Denmark Match

Ronaldo said he later spoke with Jesus and they agreed that the coach would address the situation during a press conference before Portugal’s match against Denmark.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus instead delivered a more confrontational briefing, which he viewed as another broken commitment.

Ronaldo then decided to leave the national team camp before the Denmark fixture. He said he believed remaining with the squad would have been harmful to the group.

“I apologise to the Portuguese people once again, but a broken word has, for me, a defining impact,” Ronaldo said.

He added that he had previously made clear he would leave whenever he felt he was no longer useful to the team.

Ronaldo Accepts Possible Punishment

The Portugal captain acknowledged that leaving the camp could result in disciplinary action.

Ronaldo said the Portuguese Football Federation should assess the incident without giving him special consideration because of his status as captain.

“The consequence of this act of mine must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” he said.

Ronaldo added that his captaincy should be considered an aggravating factor rather than a reason for leniency.

Portugal Moves Forward

Despite the controversy, Portugal continued its Nations League campaign and secured its place in the quarter-finals.

The latest dispute now places attention on the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus as Portugal prepares for its next international commitments.

Ronaldo has also made clear that he remains available for national team selection despite the fallout.

The Portuguese Football Federation’s response will determine whether the veteran forward faces a formal sanction over his departure from the camp.
