Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja delivered an emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on October 7, 2026.

Sakaja spoke during the handover and dedication ceremony of Raila’s mausoleum at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.

The ceremony was attended by President William Ruto, members of the Odinga family and other national leaders.

Sakaja: Raila Was Like a Father

Sakaja revealed that his relationship with Raila went beyond politics. He described the former Prime Minister as a father figure who privately mentored, guided and supported him.

“Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for guiding me. Thank you for the moments the public never saw. Thank you for being Baba,” Sakaja said.

The governor said he mourns Raila in the same way a son mourns the loss of a father. His remarks offered a glimpse into the personal relationship they shared away from the public spotlight.

Sakaja Shares Lessons From Raila

The Nairobi governor also reflected on the leadership lessons he learned from Raila. He said Raila taught him that leaders sometimes have to stand alone before others understand their cause.

Sakaja also recalled Raila’s ability to disagree strongly with others without allowing political differences to create hatred. The lessons, he said, continue to shape the next generation of leaders.

Raila’s Legacy Lives Beyond the Mausoleum

Sakaja said the mausoleum represents only one part of Raila’s lasting legacy. While the state was unveiling a physical monument, he argued that Raila’s greatest monument exists within Kenya’s democratic space.

He also pointed to the young leaders Raila mentored and empowered throughout his political career. The ceremony forms part of national commemorations ahead of the first anniversary of Raila’s death on October 15, 2026.
