“Arrest Me If You Want” MP David Ochieng Confesses To Growing And Using Bhang In Parliament

Ugenya MP Hon. David Ochieng shocked the National Assembly this week. He openly admitted to growing and consuming bhang at home during a parliamentary session on 10th June, 2026.

Speaker Moses Wetangula immediately interrupted him.

“You are confessing the commission of a crime,” Wetangula warned firmly.

Ochieng didn’t flinch. Instead, he fired back boldly.

Yes, and the police can do what they want to do. I mean… so every single evening at 10:00 PM, the way you take your tea, the way you do the Chinese tea, I would boil the water, put a few leaves in it not smoke, just put a few leaves in it and then I would sleep well till the following day in the morning.

How Back Pain Changed Everything

Five years ago, Ochieng suffered serious, debilitating back pain. Consequently, doctors recommended surgery in India. However, one doctor advised him against it he was too young.

So Ochieng tried something unconventional. Every evening at 10PM, he boiled fresh bhang leaves in water. He drank it like tea before sleeping. Importantly, he never smoked it.

He repeated this routine consistently for one full year. Eventually, the pain disappeared completely.

He still uses fresh leaves during cold Nairobi months in June and July.

His Bold Case For Legalisation

Beyond his personal story, Ochieng was making a deliberate political argument. Since the 1960s, Kenya has impounded bhang smuggled from Uganda weekly. Despite this, nothing has changed.

Furthermore, he pointed to powerful global examples. In the United States, Mexico, and South Africa, governments legally regulate bhang in open dispensaries. Citizens access it freely for medicine or recreation.

Therefore, Ochieng argued Kenya must stop colonial-era policing. Instead, the government should regulate, educate, and treat bhang as a serious public health matter.

What Happens Next

Parliament has since referred the matter to a committee for further review. Meanwhile, whether Ochieng faces legal consequences for his confession remains unclear.

Nevertheless, his speech has already ignited a fierce national debate. Kenyans are now asking hard questions about bhang laws, personal freedom, and public health.

One thing is certain, this moment will not disappear quietly.
