Sonko Helps Lay Utumishi Fire Victim to Rest
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has facilitated the burial arrangements of Zuhura Rama, a Grade 10 student who died in the tragic Utumishi Girls Senior School fire.
Consequently, the intervention has eased the burden on the grieving family. Additionally, Sonko fulfilled his earlier pledge to support families affected by the tragedy.
His assistance comes as families continue mourning the loss of 16 students who perished in the dormitory fire.
Body Airlifted to Family Home
Sonko sponsored the transfer of Zuhura’s body from the mortuary to her home in Kwale County. Consequently, the family received support in transporting their loved one for burial.
The move ensured that burial preparations proceeded without financial challenges. Additionally, community members praised the gesture during a difficult period for the family.
The support forms part of broader efforts to assist victims’ families.
Classmates Receive Travel Assistance
Sonko also arranged transportation for students wishing to attend the burial ceremony. Consequently, several of Zuhura’s classmates received free flight tickets from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Ukunda.
The arrangement allows friends and fellow students to pay their final respects. Additionally, it gives them an opportunity to support the bereaved family. The initiative highlights efforts to promote solidarity among affected students.

Sonko Arranges Return Transport for Students
In addition to providing flight tickets, Sonko organized return travel for students attending the burial. Consequently, the students will travel back to Nairobi aboard the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
The arrangement allows them to attend the funeral without worrying about transport costs. Additionally, it guarantees a safe and comfortable journey back to school.

Zuhura Rama to Be Laid to Rest in Kwale
Family members will bury Zuhura Rama in Mkwakwani Village, Ukunda Ward, within Msambweni Sub-County.The burial ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 1:00 PM.
Consequently, relatives, friends, classmates, and community members will gather to pay their final respects.
Zuhura becomes the first victim of the Utumishi Girls Academy fire tragedy to be released for burial. Therefore, her funeral marks a painful milestone for grieving families.
Sonko Extends Support to More Families
Following the tragedy, Sonko pledged to support other affected families. Additionally, he offered free VIP hearses, coffins, and transport services to those in need.
