Inclusive basketball coaching training for Kenyan educators in Kitengela

The Kitengela training equipped teachers to adapt basketball lessons for children with disabilities and diverse learning needs.

A hundred Kenyan physical education teachers and educators completed training in inclusive basketball coaching in Kitengela on Tuesday. The initiative focused on helping children with disabilities take a meaningful part in sport.

Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group and NBA Africa organised the session under their Basketball Experience programme. Fam Sports Arena Basketball Court hosted the full-day training, which combined classroom lessons with practical court activities.

Inclusive basketball coaching for different learning needs

The Basketball Experience Disability Inclusion (BE-DI) Teachers Awareness Day gave educators practical ways to teach basketball fundamentals. It also covered how teachers can accommodate children with diverse learning needs.

Using the Jr. NBA curriculum, the training emphasised safe coaching practices suited to children’s ages and abilities. Educators explored adaptive techniques, accessible activities and ways to design inclusive lessons.

Through these approaches, the initiative seeks to reduce barriers that keep children with disabilities out of sport. Its aim is to create settings where children with different abilities can learn and play together.

Life skills alongside basketball fundamentals

The programme also included life-skills training in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross. This component highlighted how sport can support teamwork, resilience and leadership, alongside health awareness and social responsibility.

Beyond court skills, AFD and NBA Africa said the broader Basketball Experience programme promotes education and inclusive opportunities. It uses basketball to help young people across communities develop life skills.

By equipping teachers to accommodate different abilities, the initiative seeks to support children’s development on and off the court.
